New Adventures in Responsive Design

The Editor in Chief of Smashing Magazine Vitaly Friedman will be giving a workshop on responsive design on Nov 11th. Places are limited and registration will start in the next couple of days.
With HTTP/2, Service Workers, Responsive Images, Flexbox, SVG, WAI-ARIA roles and Font Loading API now available in browsers, we all are still trying to figure out just the right strategy for designing and buildings responsive websites efficiently.

We want to use all of these technologies and smart processes like atomic design, but how can we use them efficiently, and how do we achieve it within a reasonable amount of time?

In this workshop, Vitaly Friedman, editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine, will be looking into a strategy for crafting fast, resilient and flexible responsive design systems by utilizing all of those wonderful shiny web technologies we have available today.
We’ll also talk about dealing with legacy browsers and will cover a few dirty little techniques that might ensure that your responsive websites will stay relevant, flexible and accessible in the years to come.

Sustainability-Focused Creative Problem Solving

Rajiv Arjan, with years of experience in user research and design, will provide this hands on workshop in creative problem solving. The focus of this workshop will be sustainability related problems. In this workshop you will be solving some of the design problems from your work or personal projects with him.

The workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to the design thinking framework and give them confidence to apply the process to solve problems creatively. This is done through learning by designing, and the course will help participants:

Come prepared with 2-3 sustainability-focused problem areas that you believe are well suited for technology design solutions. From these ideas, we will identify our design challenge that participants will tackle using the design thinking framework.

Generative Design Research

– how to use generative tools for the purpose of designing new technologies

During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to play a role of design researcher. Your task will be to plan and conduct a design research project to inspire new solutions. You will work in small groups and undergo the entire research process. You will start from defining the purpose of the research, prepare research questions, determine target group and design generative tools which will be used to gain project inspiration.

Our workshop will be focused on generative tools. You will learn how to create such tools and how to use them during design research. Additionally, you will have an opportunity to test the self-created tools – you will conduct the research to recognise needs, dreams and expectations of the people with respect to explored topic.

Before the workshop, we will send you a mind map by e-mail. We will ask you to print the map, fill it in and bring to the workshop. Creating the mind map will take at least 1 hour depending on your involvement. No other preparation is required  – just come in a positive mood with an “open minded” attitude.

Using Storytelling in User Experience
How Stories Can Help UX

Every usability issue starts with a story. That is the base of our design decisions. On a practical level we have to know each user just like a character in a drama. In this workshop we will tackle how to design systems in a meaningful way by using the power of stories.

We will go over the essential ingredients of good storytelling. Thus, we will see how stories can be used in our user research. Moreover, to examine current UX practices like Persona Creation and Storyboarding and see how stories can better illustrate usability issues.
